Survival With Emergency Tourniquet Use to Stop Bleeding in Major Limb Trauma.
Military investigators report a survival benefit in patients with major limb trauma with emergency tourniquets used in hemorrhage control. In both prehospital and hospital settings, survival rates were better in patients with tourniquets used and when tourniquets were used before shock onset.Page: 1DOI: 10.1097/SLA.0b013e31818842baAuthors: Kragh, John F. The Effects of Trauma Center Care, Admission Volume, and Surgical Volume on Paralysis After Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury.
We studied 4121 patients diagnosed with traumatic spinal cord injury, who were treated in 100 trauma centers and 601 nontrauma centers to evaluate the compliance with American College of Surgeons triage guidelines and whether trauma center designation, hospital traumatic spinal cord injury case volume, or spinal surgery volume is associated with paralysis. Only 57.9% (n = 2378) of patients received care at a designated trauma center. Paralysis was significantly lower at trauma centers than nontrauma centers (adjusted odds ratio 0.67; 95% confidence interval, 0.53-0.85; P = 0.001).Page: 10DOI: 10.1097/SLA.0b013e31818a1505Authors: Macias, Carlos Aitor MD, MPH *+; Rosengart, Matthew R. The Message is Clear: Patients With Spinal Column Injury Should Be Treated at a Trauma Center to Decrease the Likelihood of Long-Term Paralysis.

The Current Role of Radiofrequency Ablation in the Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Systematic Review.
With the development of various local-regional therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma, surgeons are increasingly confronted with the dilemma of selecting the best treatment option. This article reviews the current status of radiofrequency ablation in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma.Page: 20DOI: 10.1097/SLA.0b013e31818eec29Authors: Lau, Wan Yee MD, FRCS, FACS, FRACS (Hon); Lai, Eric C. Total Skin-Sparing Mastectomy: Complications and Local Recurrence Rates in 2 Cohorts of Patients.
The impact of surgical and reconstructive variables on complication rates after total skin-sparing mastectomy is unknown. We compared the outcomes of total skin-sparing mastectomy in 2 cohorts of patients to assess how changes in operative and reconstructive technique employed in the second cohort affected outcomes.Page: 26DOI: 10.1097/SLA.0b013e31818e41a7Authors: Garwood, Elisabeth R.
