Operating Room Ventilation With Laminar Airflow Shows No Protective Effect on the Surgical Site Infection Rate in Orthopedic and Abdominal Surgery.
In this analysis of a large data pool from the German national nosocomial infections surveillance system, the odds ratio for acquiring a severe surgical site infection (SSI) after hip prosthesis implantation was significantly higher using laminar airflow operating room ventilation (1.63 < 1.06, 2.52>), as compared with turbulent ventilation. In the case of knee prosthesis, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, colon surgery, and herniorrhaphy, no significant differences were detected in the outcome of severe SSI.Page: 695DOI: 10.1097/SLA.0b013e31818b757dAuthors: Brandt, Christian MD *; Hott, Uwe MD *; Sohr, Dorit PhD *; Daschner, Franz MD, PhD +; Gastmeier, Petra MD, PhD *; Ruden, Henning MD, PhD *

Improved Quality of Life Outcomes After Laparoscopy-Assisted Distal Gastrectomy for Early Gastric Cancer: Results of a Prospective Randomized Clinical Trial.
Although there are randomized prospective studies supporting the use of a laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy for gastric cancer, they are primarily focused on oncologic outcome; these prior reports have not addressed postoperative quality of life.
