Key Deadline Approaching for Some ABFM Diplomates

Here's a reminder for family physicians who certified or recertified with the American Board of Family Medicine, or ABFM, in 2005: If you want to continue on the path to earning a three-year extension on your certificate, you only have until Dec. 31 of this year to complete the first stage of ABFM's Maintenance of Certification Program for Family Physicians, or MC-FP, 10-year certification option.
Just-released METRIC Module Tackles Depression

The Academy's performance improvement program known as METRIC, or Measuring, Evaluating and Translating Research Into Care, recently launched a new module on depression that will be of special interest to family physicians. Bruce Bagley, M.D., AAFP's medical director of quality improvement, said the latest module -- Depression: Improving Patient Care -- will help physicians organize their approach to treating patients with depression.
AAFP Works With WellPoint to Produce CME Bulletin on Childhood Obesity

The AAFP's latest CME Bulletin, "Assessment, Prevention and Treatment of Childhood Obesity," tackles a health issue many practicing family physicians are becoming all too familiar with: managing obesity in their younger patients. According to the bulletin, obesity in children and adolescents has more than doubled in the past 25 years and can have a significant adverse impact on adult health, including the potential for pulmonary, endocrine, gastrointestinal, hepatic, reproductive and cardiovascular disorders.

The AAFP has launched a new online classroom, dubbed LearningLink, that provides Academy members with CME in multiple formats. The free program focuses on specific diseases or medical conditions, with pain management as the first topic.

The webcast is part of the Academy's Americans in Motion, or AIM, fitness initiative.
