SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. — New rules intended to prevent animal abuse and cheating will be in place when the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration opens today — and the state's $267 million walking horse industry is hopeful the changes will restore the image of the breed and the event.

State Assemblyman Joseph Malone (R-30) wants to use bare-knuckle politics to get legislators in Trenton to understand the importance of New Jersey's horse industry and racing. Malone made his remarks at a recent meeting of about 40 top equine industry members and local and state legislators at Rick's Saddle Shop in Upper Freehold Township.

UPPER FREEHOLD - Joe Jennings' love of antique road coaches began as a kid in the 1950s when he first saw them at an exhibition in Oceanport's Monmouth Park. Although he had driven pleasure horses before, it wasn't until 1986 that coaches started to reappear in the driving world and he first tried his hand at driving the antique vehicles.

"It would be very easy to plant houses here," said the fifth-generation Fremont farmer and horse breeder, staring out into seemingly endless rows of oats and corn. "I'd make a lot more money and work less.
